Scion Update

Time Posted on June 04, 2010 User ChargeCar Team

The Scion has become an active supercapacitor-battery testbed. We have 3 kilowatt-hours of deep cycle marine batteries in the car, together with a 50 watt-hour supercap, and have installed all the circuitry that enables us to drive around with either or both batteries and supercap, charging and regenning. We are measuring overall efficiencies of approximately 3.5 - 4 miles per kilowatt-hour, which is about right for this size car. As a next step, we are designing and then executing high-fidelity efficiency tests with and without the supercap to measure overall duty on the battery and the degree to which smart algorithms can affect battery efficiency during an urban commute. At present, the inside of the car looks a bit like an airplane, with a number of steam gauges, digital gauges and switches. Driving it feels similar to flying an airplane in Instrument-flying conditions. However, the ultimate goal is to put a computer in charge of the power-management decisions, so over the next 4 weeks we will be testing, installing and the driving with automated power management on-board. We have also gathered a large body of empirical data about the actual performance of batteries in driving conditions, and we will use this data to develop and publish a physics simulator that better matches the performance we are seeing. In addition, after battery testing is complete, we will replace the marine deep cycle batteries we're currently using with lithium iron phosphate batteries to evaluate the performance of a different chemistry.

Why would you choose to convert a vehicle with such poor aerodynamics?

The drag coefficient on our scion is actually pretty comparable to a Honda Civic made around the same time. So even though it may look like a box on wheels, it apparently rated very well in someones wind tunnel tests.

The main reasons we chose the Scion was because it is very light and has a lot of cargo room.

Authentic ugg australia boots are manufactured from double-faced sheepskin. Products, which are being sold at a very low price, are usually not made from sheep skin. cheap ugg boots either made from faux fur or fake fur, and calling them ugg boots is misleading. Some manufacturers use pig-skin in order to cut their production cost. This kind of product is indeed cheap, but the quality is incomparable to authentic UGG?, although they are sometimes sold under their name.
